In Haifa, the magnificent Bahai Gardens await you. The gardens are located on Mount Carmel and occupy 200,000 square meters, and rise up the mountain for a kilometer in height. They are arranged in terraces. These gardens are not a botanical fad, but a symbol of the Bahá’í Faith. There is such a religion. At the very top, on the last, nineteenth terrace stands the Bahai Temple. The number 19 is symbolic for the Baha’i religion. These gardens began to be erected in 1987. The architect is Fariborz Sahba from Iran, the design engineers are Karban and Co from Haifa. Together with the Baha’i World Center Buildings in the Western Galilee, they are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The gardens opened to the public in 2001. Not far from the Bahai Gardens, you can see the first German colony built in the 19th century. Houses with thick walls and pitched tiled roofs are strikingly different from Israeli buildings. The colony was built by the Templars, who believed that their help in the restoration of Christian Palestine contributed to the second coming of the Messiah.
